Candler's location: West of Asheville in the Blue Ridge Mountains
The town of Candler, NC, rests on the western side of Asheville just off I-40 at Exit-44. When driving through this quiet community, the "rat race" and some of the hustle and bustle from the city are left behind. It has been said that Candler offers some of the best mountain views in Buncombe County and the Asheville area. The mountains are indeed beautiful and form a protective barrier that shields Candler and surrounding areas from much of the harshest weather coming from the south and west. It is a community steeped in tradition and family values. Neighbors know and care about each other and children gather to play in the afternoons after school.
Candler is home to many restaurants, shops and everyday conveniences. Grocery stores, banks, and drug stores abound. Several large hotels and a couple of bakeries call Candler home as do a dance studio and several area gyms. There is a branch of the Asheville Library and a large post office. A couple of parks grace the area and provide soccer, baseball, and swimming activities a well as covered picnic shelters and playgrounds. Walking trails are built at several of the area schools and are opened to the public in the afternoons. Candler also offers a diversity of religious opportunities with numerous churches serving a broad range of denominations. An extension of the Asheville-Buncombe Technical College is housed within the community and offers a wide range of learning opportunities to residents each semester. The Enka Schools' Foundation is established in the community and helps bring extra funding to the Enka-Candler District Schools. Since 2005 the foundation has directly or indirectly helped raise over $200,000.00 in grant monies for the public high school, middle school and four elementary schools within the local school district. Numerous civic organizations have chapters in the area. The Pisgah View Ranch, noted as "The Oldest All Inclusive Guest Ranch Resort in Western North Carolina" is located in Candler. Highway 19-23, Smokey Park Highway, runs through the heart of the Candler community and is the primary artery that connects the community to I-40 and Asheville to the east. Candler is enjoying steady growth as is evidenced by widespread new development. It is truly a beautiful, convenient place to call home.
